How to Register a Schlumbergera or Rhipsalidopsis Cultivar

1. Visit the website

Go to https://www.schlumbergera.net/.

2. Open the registration form

Click on the “Register Cultivar” tab.

Before completing the application, please read the registration rules carefully. Some of the most important requirements are:

  • The application must include at least three photographs:
    • one showing the face of the flower,
    • one showing the side of the flower with the ovary receptacle clearly visible,
    • one showing the entire plant to illustrate its growth habit.
  • If the registrant is not the hybridizer, the registrant must confirm that they have the hybridizer’s permission to register the cultivar.
  • All measurements must be given in centimeters.
  • The cultivar should have flowered for at least two consecutive years, with consistent flower shape and colour.
  • The cultivar name must comply with the International Cultivar Registration Authority (ICRA) rules and should not be offensive or inappropriate for use as the name of a Schlumbergera or Rhipsalidopsis cultivar.

3. Measure the flower

Instructions for measuring flower size are provided in the illustration on the website.

4. Complete the registration form

Please provide the following information:

General information

  • Genus: Schlumbergera or Rhipsalidopsis
  • Cultivar name
  • Registrant (your name)
  • Street address
  • City
  • Province/State/Territory
  • Country
  • Postal/ZIP code
  • Email address

Hybridizer information

  • Hybridizer (the person who pollinated (made the cross))
  • Hybridizer’s country
  • Hybridizer references (optional)

Naming information

  • Name giver (the person who proposed the name of the cultivar)
  • Year of naming

Plant information

  • Plant growth habit (upright or pendant)
  • Origin of the cultivar (seedling or mutation)
  • Parentage (pod parent/mother plant and pollen parent/father plant)
  • Year of pollination

Flower characteristics

  • Main flower colour
  • Flower form (zygomorphic or symmetrical)
  • Flower length (cm), measured according to the illustration on the website
  • Flower diameter (cm), measured according to the illustration on the website
  • Petal shape (elliptic, lanceolate, or ovoid)
  • Petals recurved (Yes/No)
  • Main stamen colour
  • Main style colour
  • Mature fruit colour
  • Ribbed fruit (Yes/No)

Additional flower description

Include, where applicable:

  • colour of the petal bases and throats,
  • mid-petal colour,
  • apex and margin colour,
  • petal tip shape (pointed, acutely pointed, or blunt),
  • floral tube colour,
  • pollen, anther, stigma, and ovary receptacle colour,
  • whether the stigma extends beyond or far beyond the anther cluster.

Phylloclade characteristics

  • Phylloclade length (cm)
  • Phylloclade width (cm)
  • Phylloclade form (crenate or dentate)

Additional plant comments

You may include information about:

  • phylloclade colour,
  • number of dentations,
  • presence of areole notches,
  • bristle size and colour (if applicable),
  • pronounced midribs,
  • straight or undulating margins,
  • phylloclade shape (rounded, angled, flat dentate, or flat crenate),
  • cultivation characteristics,
  • growth habit,
  • trademarks,
  • plant breeder’s rights,
  • awards received,
  • the origin or meaning of the cultivar name (if applicable).

If you need assistance preparing these comments, the Registrar will be happy to help based on your photographs.

Availability

Provide information about:

  • Grower (the person who raised the plant from seed)
  • Distributor (the person or company that introduced the cultivar into commerce or distributed it to others). The registrant may also be the distributor.

Photographs

Indicate:

  • the number of photographs submitted,
  • the photographer(s).

5. Upload the photographs

Attach the required photographs to your application.

6. Accept the Privacy Policy

Read and agree to the Privacy Policy.

7. Submit your application

Click Submit to send your registration.

8. PDF registration form

If you prefer, you may complete and submit the PDF registration form, which is also available on our website.
